How to Choose Paper For your Wedding Invitations

If you decide to work with us at Jill Ng Studio, we guide our clients through every step of the design process - including sharing samples of paper (in-person if local and via mail for longer distances), making recommendations of what type of surface will work best for the selected printing technique, as well as what fits best with their wedding style.
Cotton Paper
Made from 100% cotton fibers, this paper has a luxurious and soft texture, ideal for letterpress and foil stamping (there are often sub-types of cotton paper created specifically for letterpress). Cotton Paper offers a classic and elegant look, and comes in many different weights.
The card pictured is 100% cotton, specialty letterpress paper.
Linen Paper
Featuring a subtle cross-hatch texture, linen paper adds a touch of sophistication and refinement to invitations. It is suitable for a variety of printing techniques, but can be tricky for some methods depending on the texture.
Hemp Paper
Hemp paper is a sustainable and eco-friendly paper option made from the fibers of the hemp plant. It is known for its durability, strength, and resistance to tearing. It has a natural, slightly textured appearance that adds a rustic and earthy charm to invitations, making it perfect for rustic-themed weddings. It is compatible with a variety of printing techniques.
Recycled Paper
Eco-friendly and sustainable, recycled paper is made from post-consumer waste, offering a textured appearance and a rustic charm. It is available in various thicknesses.
Velvet Paper
Velvet paper is a luxurious and tactile paper option that mimics the softness and texture of velvet fabric. It has a plush and velvety surface that adds a sophisticated and opulent touch to wedding invitations. Velvet paper is known for its smoothness and rich appearance, making it ideal for elegant and high-end wedding stationery. it is often used for special inserts, envelope liners, or as a cover material for invitation suites.
The cards pictured are foiled on velvet paper, and although you can’t see it - they feature a textured linen cardstock on the back!
Vellum Paper
A translucent paper with a delicate and ethereal appearance, vellum is often used as an overlay or folder for invitations or as an envelope liner, adding a layer of elegance.
Pictured here is a bridal shower invitation we created featuring a vellum paper overlay with a hand drawn design, over a hand written invitation and the focal point is a hand drawn venue on 100% cotton cardstock.
Parchment Paper
Resembling ancient parchment, this paper has a slightly rough texture and an antique look, perfect for vintage-themed invitations or rustic weddings.
Metallic Paper
Featuring a metallic or pearlescent finish, metallic paper adds a touch of shimmer and glamour to invitations. It is available in a range of colors, textures, and weights!
The invitation folder pictured here is a piece from one of our custom designed invitations suite, and was created from an off-white, heavy-weight metallic cardstock topped off with custom engraved silk ribbon featuring the couple’s names.
Cardstock
Cardstock is a broad category of paper, and can encompass many different types of papers (including 100% Cotton Cardstock). Cardstock comes in a variety of weights, textures, and finishes (matte, glossy, etc.). Matte cardstock is a smooth and non-glossy paper, matte cardstock provides a clean and modern look, suitable for digital printing and flat designs. It is available in various weights
Deckle-Edged Paper
Paper with deckle edges has a torn or feathered appearance, adding a rustic and artisanal touch. It is often used for vintage or romantic-themed invitations.
